Rewiring Your Writing

Ahh, writing. The swirls and twirls your brain processes only to be splattered on paper in a completely different way. Why is that? We can be so imaginative in our heads—our dreams feel real, and reading is like living in a movie. But when it comes to putting pen to paper, somehow what we write feels like garbage. What’s up with that?

There are two major killers of writing: fear and perfectionism. Fear that you’re not good enough, and then the flip side—being unable to release something that isn’t perfect. Why are we constantly told that no one is perfect, yet we believe we need to reach perfection to share anything creative? It’s weird! We need to rewire our brains. Here are a few ways to do that:

  1. Talk to Yourself: Yep, out loud, in your head, or write notes to yourself. Say, “I AM AN AUTHOR,” or “I AM AN ARTIST.” You’re already talking to yourself with doubt, so why not switch it up? A few months ago, I wouldn’t have dared to call myself an author. No way—I don’t have a degree in this, I don’t have clout, I don’t even have a clue what I’m doing. I told myself to knock it off with that talk. I accidentally discovered this strategy. I started making content for my socials, repeating over and over that I am a writer and an author. And guess what? Overtime, I started to believe it.

  2. Practice Makes (Almost) Perfect: Write, even if it’s just a little bit, every single day. If an awesome thought hits you, jot it down in your phone notes or scribble it in your journal. Like anything else, if you practice, you’ll get better. It’s that simple.

  3. Writing Is Just Thinking: That’s all it is! What a relief. They’re just your thoughts put down on paper or a document. It’s really not that big of a deal.

Rewiring your brain to think like an author can be tough. But honestly, rewiring your brain for anything is a challenge! So, let’s start with one of the points above—speak it into existence… and practice talking to yourself (and writing) every single day. Remember, writing is just your thoughts—that’s it. Oh, and just be yourself—it’s a lot easier.
