Editors: Where do you find one?
Don’t feel like reading? Head over to my YouTube Channel and listen to me rant on my video called Editors: Where Do You Find One?:
So, you’ve finally finished your manuscript (congrats!) and now it’s time to hand it over to someone who can polish it up and make it shine. But where do you find this magical being? Fear not! I’ve got you covered with three platforms where you can find freelance editors to take your book to the next level.
1) Fiverr
Let’s start with Fiverr, the land of freelancers offering services for just about everything under the sun. Need an editor? They’ve got plenty. Fiverr is a user-friendly platform where you can filter through editors by price, ratings, and experience. Sounds great, right? Well, here’s the thing—just about anyone can sign up for work on Fiverr, which means you need to vet, vet, vet! I haven’t had this happen to me personally, but I’ve read some horror stories of authors getting scammed or paying for services they didn’t really understand. So, if you’re going to use Fiverr, make sure to do your homework. Check reviews, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to walk away if something feels off.
2) Upwork
Next up is Upwork, a platform similar to Fiverr but with a bit more of a professional vibe. Upwork is home to a wide range of freelancers, including editors, and even has a large AI section if you’re into that sort of thing. Now, I’m a bit old-school and prefer a real human touch when it comes to editing, but hey, times are changing. I’ve heard some positive chatter from fellow authors who’ve found great editors on Upwork, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Just like with Fiverr, though, be sure to vet your candidates. You want someone who’s got the chops to handle your manuscript with care.
3) Reedsy
And now, for my personal favorite—Reedsy. This platform is like the gold standard when it comes to finding freelance editors in the writing and publishing world. Unlike Fiverr and Upwork, Reedsy doesn’t just let anyone join the party. Editors on Reedsy have to be verified, meaning they’ve shown proof of past work, testimonials, and more before they’re allowed to hang up their virtual shingle. This means you’re getting top-notch professionalism, which, let’s be honest, should always be our priority. If you’re looking for an editor who truly understands the creative process and the ins and outs of the publishing industry, Reedsy is the place to be.
And there you have it—three platforms to get you started on your hunt for the perfect editor. I hope this helps, and if you found it useful, feel free to pass this resource along to your author pals. If you need a recap (or just want to see me in action), head over to my YouTube channel where I vlog all about this.
Hope to talk soon—bye!
